Name: Irene
Breed: Bearded Collie/Great Dane Mix
Issues: Irene was thrown out of a car in the middle of a busy intersection in Ohio when she was 3 months old. We think it is because she is deaf...born deaf (probably didn't pay attention to the people. Because she is deaf, she gets a little agitated around strange dogs.
Quirks: Irene the Queen has huge, hairy paws; she looks like a Clydesdale. She slaps me with her big paws when she wants her cookies. Also she absolutely INSISTS on sleeping on our king size bed with us. She's not very graceful and makes us laugh with her "clownish" mannerisms.
Interests: Irene loves her older brother, Fredi, Jr. (Bearded/Border Collie mix). In fact, she follows him and does exactly as he does...so it was easy to train her as a deaf dog. But she also knows sign language. She is very dependent and won't let us out of her sight. In the winter, she rides in the golf cart with us at our Arizona home. She also is fascinated with the bunnies that live in our neighborhood. In the summer at our home in central Oregon, she enjoys boat rides on the river and many walks in the wood. And she loves to chase the squirrels.
